US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insists that "no one has died" because of the cuts. Even though the US withdrew from Afghanistan four years ago, it had still contributed nearly half their total aid. Then it cancelled $1.7 billion in contracts, of which around $500 million had yet to be disbursed. The US State Department did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
