These mammoths are the work of the artist Nick Cave, and are just one component of a monumental show at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in which the artist catalogs and transforms thousands of objects of American life.

“Mammoth," which opened February 13, is the institution’s largest commission by a single artist to date. The show calls into question how history is formed and what is buried or excavated, particularly with the symbolism of the titular creature.

It opens at a time when the Smithsonian is under increased federal scrutiny, though the show has been years in the making.

“I’m witnessing a time where history is being erased, but yet history is being revealed at the same time,” Cave told CNN. #cnn #news
