The FN SCAR isn’t just a rifle—it’s a meme, a military contract win, a $3–4K flex, and a pop-culture icon. Born from SOCOM’s late-’90s demand for a do-everything “super rifle,” FN gave us the SCAR-L (MK16) and SCAR-H (MK17): short-stroke piston, quick-change barrels, ambi controls, folding/adjustable stock, and battlefield reliability from desert to mountain snow.
The MK16 didn’t replace the M4 like the brochures promised—but the MK17/SCAR-H earned its keep where 5.56 runs out of steam. Then gaming made it immortal: CoD, Battlefield, Fortnite… suddenly everyone knew the SCAR. Civilian models (16S, 17S, 20S) turned it into the “I made it” rifle—part performance, part identity, 100% conversation starter.
