YouTube Description
as posted by the channelSeven people were shot in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Two teenagers were killed. And almost immediately, the media called it a mass shooting.
In this video, I break down why that label matters, what actually happened at Lineback Park, and why calling every multi-victim shooting a “mass shooting” changes how the public understands gun violence, crime, and the policies being pushed in response. According to reporting on the incident, this began as a pre-planned fight between groups of teenagers that escalated into gunfire — a real tragedy, but not the same thing as an indiscriminate public attack on random strangers.
That distinction matters because different kinds of violence have different causes, different patterns, and different solutions. When the media collapses all of it into the same category, it creates fear, inflates public perception, and makes it easier to sell the next round of gun control as the answer to problems those laws were never designed to solve.
I also get into the bigger issue behind the Winston-Salem shooting: what the local District Attorney said openly about the role of family, community, and moral formation, and why that cuts closer to the truth than any talking point about “common sense” gun laws. This video is about the language game, the policy game, and what gets lost when the media packages very different forms of violence as if they are all the same thing.
If you’ve been following the Winston-Salem shooting, the debate over what counts as a mass shooting, how media framing affects the gun control debate, or why these definitions matter for Second Amendment conversations, this video lays it out clearly.
