According to recent reports, Jamaal Bowman, a former New York congressman, appeared on CNN NewsNight on June 26, 2025. During this appearance, Bowman claimed that the higher rates of chronic diseases among Black people, such as heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes, are due to the stress of experiencing racist incidents, including being called the "N-word" daily, either directly or indirectly. He expressed strong emotions about the issue, raising his voice and stating that the United States is not adequately addressing the "disease of hate and racism towards black and brown people". Bowman also criticized Republicans for not holding their party accountable for racism. He suggested that if Republicans would be more open to listening, learning, and growing, the country could be improved. Another guest on the show, former California Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado, responded by acknowledging Bowman's passion and saying that racism happens on both sides.
