In 1996, investigative journalist Gary Webb published "Dark Alliance," a bombshell series alleging that a CIA-connected drug network helped fuel the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles. The story made him a hero to some and a target to others. Major newspapers went after his reporting. Pressure mounted inside his own newsroom. Then, in 2004, Gary Webb was found dead.

In this episode, Vanessa Richardson examines the rise and fall of Gary Webb: the investigation that changed his life, the forces that worked to discredit him, and the circumstances surrounding his death. Was he a journalist who paid the ultimate price for exposing a dangerous truth, or did his story spiral beyond what the evidence could actually support?
