According to a Paiute legend, a grieving widowed chief journeyed into a vast underground cave system in search of his late wife. Guided by spirits, he crossed into an afterlife known as Shin-Au-Av — a hidden city with meadows, music, and a mysterious princess who guarded the boundary between worlds.

She warned him: to bring his wife back to the land of the living, they must run from the Spirit World without ever looking back.

He did. And at the last moment… he turned around.

In an instant, the city vanished. His wife was gone. And the chief returned alone, forever marked by what he’d seen in the “Ghost Land.”

Some believe this legend explains why parts of Death Valley — and even the Nevada Triangle beyond it — have long been associated with vanishings, portals, and the dead.
