James Angleton edited a poetry magazine at Yale before he was drafted to fight in World War II.

He moved to London and was assigned to the Office of Strategic Services, aka America's wartime intelligence agency and the precursor to the CIA. Specifically, he worked in a unit called X-2, which handled counterintelligence. His job was to figure out who's working for the enemy.

The skills Jim honed analyzing poetry – looking for hidden meanings and reading between lines – turn out to be exactly the skills you need to catch spies.
