Heilbrun testified that a person may not be criminally responsible if, at the time of the offense, they suffered from a mental disease or defect that affected their ability to understand the wrongfulness of their actions or conform their behavior to the law. Clancy is accused of killing her three children in January 2023 before attempting to take her own life; the defense argues she was suffering from severe postpartum depression and psychosis that left her unable to understand her actions.
