Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were shot dead at the dog kennels at Moselle on June 7 2021. Alex Murdaugh called 911 claiming he found their bodies. He was later arrested and convicted for their murders.

Alex Murdaugh once stood at the center of one of South Carolina’s most powerful legal dynasties. Today, his name is synonymous with deception, addiction, and murder.

In this video, I interview two-time Emmy nominated filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, co-creator of the Hulu docuseries Murdaugh Murders: Death in the Family. We discuss the making of the series and the difficult choices involved in telling this story—particularly how Maggie Murdaugh was often treated as a footnote in her own murder, both in coverage and in the larger narrative surrounding the case.

Together, we examine Alex Murdaugh’s decisions leading up to the killings and debate the role that drug addiction and personality traits often associated with psychopathy may have played in his behavior.
