The decision struck down the Civil Rights Act of 1875, a federal law that granted all people access to public accommodations like trains and theaters, regardless of race. Justice John Marshall Harlan, known as The Great Dissenter, cast the lone vote in opposition, and his dissent eventually eclipsed the legacy of the majority opinion. Find more information here
