The death toll continues to rise after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Turkey and northern Syria early on Monday. President Biden has pledged full US support in the search and rescue effort. In a statement, he said senior US officials are coordinating with their Turkish counterparts to help the injured and displaced by the earthquake. He added that U.S.-supported humanitarian partners are also responding to the destruction in Syria.

US Navy recovery teams continue to comb the debris field for the Chinese spy balloon that was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said recovering the equipment will take time but ultimately help national security efforts. He added that the US has already learned much just by watching the balloon move across the country.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is rejecting fears of a recession and says the economy remains strong and resilient. Her comments come after last week's jobs report showed that the economy added 517,000 jobs in January.
