Washington Today (10-25-23): Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) elected Speaker

U.S. House of Representatives elects a new Speaker, Mike Johnson (R-LA). He gets all the Republican votes casts, ending three weeks of uncertainty where three other Republican Speaker nominees failed to get the republican support needed to be elected.

Speaker Johnson tells Members of Congress he wants to restore people's faith in the House, saying

"There’s a lot going on in our country, domestically and abroad and we are ready to get to work again to solve those problems."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) introduced the new speaker today, but in an earlier conversation with a think tank said,

"Mike Johnson has a very pleasant demeanor, but his voting record is as extreme as the most extreme members of his conference with very few exceptions,"

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in is Washington, DC for a state visit, meeting with President Joe Biden in the White House Oval Office, and the two holding a joint news conference, reaffirming the alliance between the U.S. and Australia is strong and discussing the war between Israel and Hamas, and between Russia and Ukraine, among other issues.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee votes 12-9 to send the nomination of Jack Lew to be U.S. Ambassador to Israel to the Senate floor. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) joining all Democrats in voting yes.

Senate Health Committee votes 15-6 to approve the nomination of Dr. Monica Bertagnolli to be director of the National Institutes of Health. Committee chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT) votes no.
