President Biden: “I do remember that”

President Biden joked about his age on Monday after Special Counsel Robert Hur's classified documents report called him a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

"I know it doesn't look like it, but I've been around a while. I do remember that," the president said to laughter in remarks before the National Association of Counties.

In a report released Thursday, the special counsel concluded the president "willfully retained" classified materials, but declined to bring charges, saying the president would likely present himself to a jury "as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

The president's jokey demeanor on Monday was a sharp departure from his fiery rebuttal on Thursday night, in which he criticized the special counsel for raising questions about his memory, taking particular issue with Mr. Hur's assertion that he did not remember when his son Beau died.

"How in the hell dare he raise that? Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself, 'It wasn't any of their damn business,'" the president said in a hastily arranged press conference. "I don't need anyone to remind me of when he passed away."

"I am well-meaning, and I'm an elderly man, and I know what the hell I'm doing. I've been president. I put this country back on its feet. I don't need his recommendation," he said. "My memory is fine."

According to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, 86% of Americans think the 81-year-old president, the oldest in U.S. history, is too old to serve another term. Nearly two-thirds also think former President Trump, 77, is too old for the presidency.
