YouTube Description
as posted by the channelSpeaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) praised his conference Tuesday after the House approved a massive government funding package to end the partial shutdown that began Saturday.
"For some reason, many of the House Democrats wanted to shut the government down again and inflict pain on the American people," he told reporters. "I'm happy to report Republicans got the job done. Our majority worked together, and we got the bills over the line."
The speaker had to get nearly every Republican on board to pass the rule for the package after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Democrats would not provide the votes needed to approve it.
Congress has now approved 11 of the 12 annual appropriations bills.
The remaining full-year bill, funding the Homeland Security Department, was removed from the package by the Senate after Democrats demanded changes to immigration enforcement operations following the killing of a second American citizen by federal agents in Minneapolis.
It was replaced with a stopgap measure funding DHS at existing levels through Feb. 13, creating a narrow window for negotiations over potential reforms.
It remains unclear whether the two sides can reach an agreement or whether Democrats would support another short-term funding measure if talks break down.
"This is no time to play games with this funding," Speaker Johnson said. "We hope that they'll operate in good faith over the next 10 days as we negotiate this."
