1:30Now PlayingSenate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) on Monday praised the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, arguing they were necessary to address the threat he said the country poses.
"It is clear that Iran poses a serious risk to America's national security interests as well as those of our allies and partners," he said, pointing to Iran's nuclear ambitions, ballistic missile program and threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Republican leader said the Trump administration turned to military action after exhausting diplomatic options.
"President Trump and his administration relentlessly pursued a diplomatic solution to the threat posed by Iran. But the Iranian regime refused diplomatic offramps. And so now the president is taking action," he said.
