2:30Now PlayingDefense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday confirmed the U.S. had downed an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, marking the first time an American submarine had destroyed an enemy vessel in combat since the waning days of World War II.
"Last night, we sunk their prized ship, the Soleimani," he said of the ship nicknamed for the Iranian senior general who assassinated by the U.S. during President Trump's first term. "Looks like POTUS got him twice."
The Pentagon played video of the strike, showing the ship blown in half before sinking to the bottom of the sea.
"An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death," Secretary Hegseth said.
