2:26Now PlayingFormer President Barack Obama gave remarks at the memorial service for the late Rev. Jesse Jackson on Friday afternoon in Chicago, praising the civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate for his commitment to hope for a better America.
"Each today we're told by those in high office to fear each other, and to turn on each other, and that some Americans count more than others—and that some don't even count at all," Obama said. "It may be tempting for some to compromise with power…Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson inspires us to take a harder path. His voice calls on each of us to be heralds of change."
Rev. Jackson died in February at age 84. Though unsuccessful, his two campaigns for the presidency, in 1984 and 1988, brought civil rights activism and left-wing opposition to the Reagan administration into mainstream politics. President Obama cited Jackson's campaigns as inspirational for his own run that would bring a Black American to the White House for the first time in the nation's history.
"What a great debt we owe to him," Obama said.
