Leavitt: “Talks continue” after Iran rejects U.S. peace plan

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday said talks continue between the U.S. and Iran after Tehran reportedly rejected a 15-point ceasefire plan offered by the U.S.

“Talks continue. They are productive,” she said, rejecting the notion that the talks had “hit a dead end.”

The 15-point plan, conveyed through Pakistani intermediaries, reportedly included sanctions relief, a rollback of Iran’s nuclear program, limits on missiles, and reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz.

But Iran rejected the offer, according to a state media TV network, which quoted an anonymous Iranian official as saying the country “will end the war when it decides to do so and when its own conditions are met.”

Iran then offered its own list of conditions, including a halt to killings of its officials, assurances that no further war would be waged against it, reparations for the war, an end to hostilities, and the ability to exercise sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

Those conditions, particularly reparations and control of the strait, are extremely unlikely to be agreed to by the U.S. side.

Ms. Leavitt cautioned White House reporters about “reporting about speculative points or speculative plans from anonymous sources.”

“The White House never confirmed that full plan,” she said. “There are elements of truth to it, but some of the stories I read were not entirely factual.”
