0:59Now PlayingSecretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday said it was in the “interest” of G7 countries to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway for oil transport that Iran has effectively shut down amid the U.S. and Israeli war.
“It’s in their interest to help. Other countries get far more of their fuel from there than we do,” he told reporters before boarding a plane to head to Paris for a meeting of G7 foreign ministers.
The G7 — a group of wealthy industrialized nations — includes the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
Secretary Rubio also backed President Trump’s criticism of NATO for declining to participate in the war, saying the U.S. has consistently supported the alliance.
“There was a couple of leaders in Europe who said this was not Europe’s war. Well, Ukraine is not America’s war and yet we’ve contributed more to that fight than any country in the world,” he said. “So, it’ll be something to examine, the president will have to take into account, down the road.”
