Jeffries slams GOP rejecting Senate-passed bill

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Friday slammed House Republicans for rejecting a Senate-passed bill to fund most of the Homeland Security Department, saying they are choosing to keep the department shut down.

“This could end, and should end today,” he told reporters, noting that the measure had unanimous support in the Senate, which approved it through voice vote early Friday morning.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) came out against the measure, which funds the entire department except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which are already well funded from Republicans’ “big, beautiful” reconciliation bill that was approved last year.

“If that bill is brought to the floor today, it will pass and the Trump–Republican DHS shutdown will be over,” Rep. Jeffries said. “But unfortunately, MAGA extremists in the House of Representatives continue to inflict pain on the American people.”

Speaker Johnson said he will instead put a bill on the floor that would fund the entire department through May 22, but it is unclear if there is enough support in the House, and it has no chance of passing in the Senate.
