as posted by the channelHumankind is heading back to the moon for the first time since 1972 following the successful launch of the Artemis II mission on Wednesday evening — a historic step that NASA hopes will pave the way for humans to eventually return to the lunar surface.
Four astronauts — three American and one Canadian — are now on a 10-day journey that will take them around the moon and back, traveling farther from Earth than any humans have ever gone: 252,799 miles.
Following a brief pause in the countdown to fix a problem with a safety system, the Orion space capsule launched aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) at 6:35pm ET from Kennedy Space Center.
If all goes according to plan, the astronauts will arrive at the moon in six days, giving them the ability to see the far side of the moon before returning to Earth and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
The Artemis II astronauts are Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch of NASA, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency.
