President Trump said Monday he would not apologize to Pope Leo XIV after criticizing the first American pontiff as “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible on Foreign Policy” over his opposition to the Iran war.

“No, I don’t because Pope Leo said things that are wrong,” he told reporters when asked if the pope deserved an apology. “He was very much against what I’m doing with regard to Iran — and you cannot have a nuclear Iran. Pope Leo would not be happy with the end result.”

“I think he’s weak on crime and other things,” he added. “He went public, I’m just responding to Pope Leo.”

Pope Leo responded to the president’s criticism by saying he had “no fear” of speaking out against the Trump administration and on behalf of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

“I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do, what the church is here to do,” he told reporters. “We are not politicians, we don’t deal with foreign policy with the same perspective he might understand it, but I do believe in the message of the gospel, as a peacemaker.”
