Trump: Talks in with Iran going “very well”

President Trump expressed optimism Thursday about the prospects for a deal with Iran, while warning the U.S. could resume fighting if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.

“I’m not sure it needs to be extended,” he told reporters at the White House. “Iran wants to make a deal, and we’re dealing very nicely with them. We’ve got to have no nuclear weapons — that’s a big factor — and they’re willing to do things today that they weren’t willing to do two months.”

The president said the talks are going “very well” and claimed that Iran had agreed to give up its nuclear ambitions.

“We have a very powerful statement that they will not have — beyond 20 years — that they will not have nuclear weapons,” he said.

President Trump initially said if there’s no deal, “the fighting resumes,” but later said he might consider extending the ceasefire set to expire next week.

“We’ll see. I don’t know that we’ll have to,” he said. “If I needed to, I would.”

The president said the next in-person talks could happen over the weekend and that he would be willing to travel to Islamabad if a deal is reached.

“Pakistan has been great. They’ve been so good,” he said. “If a deal is signed in Islamabad, I might go.”
