"We don't reduce stigma by changing words," he said at a Michigan Democratic Party fundraising dinner. "We reduce stigma by changing hearts."
The Kentucky Democrat said the party must speak to voters as equals if it wants to win elections and advance key policy goals.
"If we want to be the party of the people, we've got to talk like we are people," he said.
Gov. Beshear has indicated he is considering a run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2028. Michigan remains a key swing state in presidential elections; President Biden won the state in 2020, while President Trump carried its 15 electoral votes in 2016 and 2024.
