Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) slammed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for his department's administration of the IRS, saying he was turning a blind eye to tax evasion. "What you've done is provided a windfall to very wealthy people who don't pay their taxes," the Maryland Democrat said in a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on Wednesday.

"Why would I do that?" Secretary Bessent shot back. "What is your theory of the case, Senator?"

"This administration has time after time tilted the tax code in favor of very wealthy people," Sen. Van Hollen said.
