Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) sharply criticized Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over the Treasury Department's administration of the IRS, accusing him of ignoring tax evasion by wealthy Americans.

"What you've done is provided a windfall to very wealthy people who don't pay their taxes," the Maryland Democrat said during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday.

"Why would I do that?" Secretary Bessent shot back. "What is your theory of the case, senator?"

"This administration has time after time tilted the tax code in favor of very wealthy people," Sen. Van Hollen said.

Democrats have also criticized President Trump's administration over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed last summer, which enacted sweeping tax cuts, as well as significant IRS funding reductions included in last year's appropriations package.
