2:00Now PlayingNew York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) celebrated the New York Knicks championship at the team's ticker-tape parade on Thursday.
"For 53 long years we have watched and we have waited," he said. "We waited without ever knowing if this day would come and we waited because we knew deep down in our sick, suffering hearts that it would. New York City, this team has done it. The New York Knicks are NBA champions!"
The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals in a five-game series, giving the franchise its first title since 1973.
