YouTube Description
as posted by the channelFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday announced the closure of an immigration detention center in the Everglades known as "Alligator Alcatraz," nearly a year after it was built.
"I said from the beginning that this was an emergency solution that would be temporary," he said at a press conference, saying it "served its purpose for the time."
The detention center was built in a matter of days in 2025, and the governor said 21,000 people were deported through the facility.
"Alligator Alcatraz fulfilled the role that it was designed to serve," he said, adding there was "no question" it made his state "safer."
"It has helped remove many, many dangerous people from the street and get out of, not only the state of Florida, but the United States of America."
