as posted by the channelMaryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) reflected on his ancestor Prince Ames, a Black and Indigenous soldier who fought in the Revolutionary War believing the new nation might one day welcome his descendants.
"For nearly six years, he fought for a country and a cause that did not yet include him, but that he perhaps believed maybe one day it would include his children, and maybe even his children's children," Gov. Moore said during a speech marking America's 250th anniversary at the Maryland State House in Annapolis.
"And today in a building that was partially built by the hands of enslaved people, I, his great-great-great-great-great grandson, now serve as the first Black governor in Maryland's history."
