In this virtual talk, speakers discuss what mind control is, how it perpetuates colonization in Canada, and how it influences the colonial agenda and colonial practices, at both individual and institutional levels.
Dr. Cindy Blackstock is a member of the Gitxsan First Nation and is honoured to serve as the Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and a professor at McGill University’s School of Social Work. She has over 30 years of experience working in child welfare and Indigenous children’s rights and has published more than 75 articles on topics relating to reconciliation, Indigenous theory, First Nations child welfare, and human rights.
Dr. Steven Hassan is an internationally recognized expert on cults, brainwashing, and authoritarian control. He is also a licensed mental health professional and founder of the Freedom of Mind Resource Centre, which provides training, consulting, and support to individuals who are struggling to leave or recover from a cult and to families and organizations that are concerned about cult behaviors.
Dr. Pamela Palmater is a Mi’kmaw citizen and member of the Eel River Bar First Nation in northern New Brunswick and comes from a large family of eight sisters and three brothers. She is a lawyer and Professor and Chair in Indigenous Governance at Ryerson University with expertise in Indigenous law, sovereignty, and nationbuilding. She has over 30 years of experience studying, volunteering, and working on social, political, and legal issues affecting First Nations.
