In a rare move, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for continuing attacks on Ukrainian civilian areas. After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome, Trump suggested Putin might not want to end the war and hinted at stronger actions, like banking or secondary sanctions. Trump's comments came as Russia claimed victory in Ukraine’s Kursk region, with Putin stating Ukraine's offensive had "completely failed."
At Pope Francis’s funeral, Trump briefly met with Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, signaling efforts toward peace. The Kremlin said Russia is open to negotiations without preconditions, but direct talks with Ukraine remain frozen.
Military expert Daniel Davis noted that while Trump has been inconsistent in his statements, Russia has been very consistent: they want a settlement on their terms or will continue fighting. Russia's battlefield position is strengthening, leaving little leverage for Ukraine or the West. Davis stressed that Russia's ultimate goal is the defeat of what Putin calls Ukraine’s "Nazi regime," either by negotiation or by military force.
