Russian forces have been targeting Ukrainian trenches, causing mounting casualties. At the same time, Ukraine faces a severe manpower crisis driven by forced mobilization, lack of training, and mass desertions—reports suggest up to 135,000 deserters since December 2024, averaging 600–700 per day. Many recruits are unwilling conscripts taken from the streets, often abused at recruitment centers, which further fuels desertion.
In early August 2025, Russia launched a northern offensive near Prosk, achieving a deep penetration of up to 18 km. However, the advance was carried out by small DRG units rather than large formations and bypassed Ukrainian strongpoints, making it difficult to sustain. Ukraine quickly redeployed four brigades from other sectors, halting Russia’s deeper push by mid-August.
Currently, fighting remains intense around Rodinska and nearby settlements, with Russia making gradual gains but unable to exploit breakthroughs decisively. Ukraine’s reserves are now stretched thin, and pulling units from other fronts risks creating new vulnerabilities. The overall picture shows Ukrainian defenses under severe strain from casualties, desertions, and limited reinforcements, while Russia advances slowly but steadily.
