Col Doug Macgregor argues that Western governments must accept geopolitical reality and stop encouraging smaller states to confront powerful neighbors. Using a 19th-century example from the Baltic region, he claims great powers historically avoided war over areas that were not vital to their own interests, and that today’s situation in Eastern Europe is a repeat of that mistake.

The proposed solution is for the U.S. president to clearly declare that the United States will not go to war with Russia, has no interest in escalation, and supports ending the Ukraine conflict—even if that means accepting border changes and Russia’s security concerns. Until Western leaders abandon what he calls a fabricated narrative of Russian aggression, the war and its economic and human costs will continue unnecessarily.
