Lt COl Daniel Davis expresses concern that U.S. operations have begun cautiously rather than with an overwhelming “shock and awe” campaign like in the Gulf War. Despite the presence of two aircraft carrier strike groups and significant capability, there has not yet been a sustained, high-volume assault targeting air defenses and command centers. The mission—neutralizing Iranian air defenses—is described as highly complex and far more difficult than past conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Syria. There are doubts about claims of previous air superiority and speculation that earlier operations may not have fully tested Iran’s defenses.

On Iran’s side, missile and drone strikes have hit U.S. base-hosting countries in the Gulf, including incidents in Dubai near landmarks like the Burj Khalifa. So far, these strikes appear limited in scale but demonstrate the ability to penetrate regional air defenses. This may be a calculated pressure tactic—signaling capability without fully escalating.

There are also reports that Iran has shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could severely disrupt global oil markets. Iran reportedly has the naval assets—mines, anti-ship missiles, drones, and small craft—to threaten shipping through the narrow waterway, creating economic and strategic leverage.

Both sides may be “holding their powder dry,” avoiding full escalation while testing limits. There is speculation about possible backchannel ceasefire efforts involving President Donald Trump, but uncertainty remains high. Overall, the situation is described as fragile, dangerous, and potentially poised for broader escalation, though both sides may still prefer de-escalation if possible.
