In England, during the 17th century, the Puritans in power viewed Christmas as too Catholic and extravagant, leading to discouragement and limitations on its celebration. However, with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Christmas celebrations were once again allowed.
In the United States, early European settlers had varying attitudes toward Christmas. Some colonies, influenced by Puritan or Calvinist beliefs, discouraged or even banned Christmas celebrations, considering it a pagan or papist holiday.
By the 19th century, attitudes towards Christmas began to change, and it gained wider acceptance, eventually becoming a federal holiday in the United States in 1870.
