YouTube Description

as posted by the channel

Peg Leg Joe, a legendary white leader of the Underground Railroad, organized the escape of Negroes from various plantations. The words to this tune were used by the freeing slaves as a guide to the path they were to follow: "the drinking gourd" -- signifying the Big Dipper pointing north; "great big river" -- the river route northward; and "left foot peg foot traveling on" -- a conventionalized symbol representing Peg Leg's wooden leg that was used to mark the road to freedom.
