YouTube Description
as posted by the channelEver wondered why there were so many black mascots on food products at a time when black people were not accepted as legitimate members of American culture? Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, Rastus from Cream of Wheat...
Well, there's an answer -- it has to do with the history of slavery, and the need for white customers to feel a sense of familiarity and comfort. Many products were introduced at that time that catered to the nostalgia American consumers had for the antebellum past -- Mammys in the kitchen, houseboys and maids attending to their every whim. Many of the vestiges of these tropes are still with us today. Companies are now acknowledging the need to rebrand after the outcries for racial injustice sparked by the events of 2020.
