He built on the legacy of pioneers like James Cleveland, Edwin and Walter Hawkins and Andrae Crouch, and leveled-up that innovation for a new era. He ushered in 90's choir music with an energetic sound and look that hearkened back to the innovative spirit of his predecessors.
Suddenly, choirs were cool again. Groups like Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ, Ricky Dillard and New G and Kirk Franklin and the Family soon followed, and presented their own version of this sleeker, streetwise ensemble. The golden age of gospel choirs was celebrated in film as well, with movies like Sister Act II, The Preacher's Wife and The Fighting Temptations.
This golden era would not have existed without the trailblazing efforts of Rev. John P. Kee. In this Breakdown, I'm taking a look at his circuitous route to become the modern-day crown price of Gospel music.
