Southern Baptist Showdown 💥 Saddleback Church Saddle-Sore 🤷‍♀️🚫🎤⛪️

Ah, the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, where decisions are made that can leave us scratching our heads in confusion. So, let me get this straight: Saddleback Church, a prominent congregation founded by Rick Warren, has been kicked out of the convention because they have women pastors? And they even voted to change their constitution to prevent any church from having women in pastoral positions? Well, well, well, let's take a moment to appreciate the absurdity of this situation.

First of all, let's remind ourselves that throughout the Bible, women have played significant roles as ministers. From Deborah, the prophetess and judge in the Old Testament, to Phoebe, who was called a deacon in the New Testament, women have been actively involved in spreading God's message. So, it seems a bit contradictory for the SBC (not to be confused with Seattle’s Best Coffee) to decide that God's chosen messengers should exclude half of His creation based solely on their gender. (Why is it that Seattle’s Best Coffee is actually Seattle’s worst coffee?)

Apparently, the representatives at the conference in New Orleans were overwhelmingly convinced that women shouldn't be pastors. I guess they must have missed those parts in the Bible where God used women as leaders, teachers, and prophets. Or maybe they have a special version of the Bible that we're not aware of. It's also worth noting that the SBC's "statement of faith" apparently limits the office of pastor to men. Ah, yes, because clearly, the Almighty Creator of the universe needs humans to set arbitrary restrictions on who He can work through.

And let's not forget the appeal made by Rick Warren himself, who urged the convention to "act like Southern Baptists who have historically 'agreed to disagree' on dozens of doctrines." It's quite ironic that a denomination known for embracing theological diversity suddenly draws the line at women pastors.

In the end, it's clear that the convention voters were unmoved by appeals and the ordination of more women as pastors at Saddleback Church.

Thousands of votes were cast in favor of upholding the decision, as if women pastors pose some sort of existential threat to the faith.

The removal of Saddleback Church only cost the denomination 99% of the total members in SBC churches. Whoops.
