Despite this event being held at a city park and seemingly against the law, the city of Seattle has allowed the fee to be charged. How charging white people fees in the name of racial inequality will help close the racial wealth gap is unclear. Lorena Gonzalez, the mayoral candidate and the Seattle Human Rights Commission have both supported the group’s right to charge people based on their race.
