ADDRESSING RAPID INFLATION
Price caps in the form of rent control, expanding medicare, gasoline, and other goods subject to price gouging.
SUPPORTING THE LABOR MOVEMENT
All essential workers deserve hazard pay for their work during the pandemic, and multi-billion corporations need to pay their workers a living wage.
Elected officials need to support organizing workers and hold union-busting firms and employers accountable.
The right to organize a union is a fundamental right in the workplace.
MEDICARE FOR ALL (CALCARE)
At 16-years-old, Joe was estimated $20,000 out-of-pocket for dental expenses.
Medicare For All is needed to fix major inequalities in California. We need a single-payer option.
Lack of ability to pay should never dictate access to care. More Californians declare bankruptcy due to medical debt than any other cause.
GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY
Holding elected officials accountable to a higher standard, no more shady back-room deals.
Restoring faith in our democracy and having hard conversations to bridge the divide.
Transparency in Government is needed and we need to root out corrupt establishment politicians.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Joe fought for and helped push through multiple affordable housing projects in Santa Cruz including 831 Water St., Library Mixed-Use Project, 130 Center Street.
Joe has continually fought against the Oversized Vehicle Ordinance, which criminalizes homelessness in Santa Cruz.
Joe is supporting SB 886, The Student Housing Crisis Act because it addresses housing insecurity that I and many other students trying to get an education face the brunt of.
RESTORING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Create union jobs and stimulate the economy, provide for a just transition, secure clean water, and air and a stable food source, equal conservation, clean up hazardous waste, and ensure indigenous people are included and centered in decision making and mobilization.
Improving and subsidizing electric vehicles and public transportation, using carbon-absorbing technology, enhancing education and training in environmentally sound practices.
Through redirecting resources from fossil fuel energy to clean, renewable energy sources and nationalizing the fossil fuel industry for their pollution and CO2 emissions is necessary for a just transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels.
Joe was born and raised in northern California. When Joe was just 15-years-old, they had to get a job and start making ends meet. At 16-years-old, they were working 2 jobs while in high school and keeping up with extra-curricular activities. Joe comes from a working-class Hispanic background, their family is proudly and deep-rooted in this community and has lived here for many generations. Their great-grandfather was a union electrician with the railroad, and growing up now, it seems that Joe is continuing that legacy. Being from a working-class, multi-ethnic family, Joe understands the importance of advocating for economic and racial justice.
From early childhood, Joe attended schools within the Western Placer Unified School District and just had begun to build an understanding of the gaps in education and opportunities given to people of different backgrounds and neighborhoods. It is this understanding that leads them to challenge the status quo. Joe knows what it’s like to live in low-income affordable housing, Joe knows what it’s like to not know when you’re gonna be able to eat your next meal and how it feels to be left behind by a system that allows for the rich to get vastly richer while the rest of us continue hard work for starvation wages.
