Kristi Noem is out. A man is dead. And the Department of Homeland Security has been partially shut down since February 13th.
56-year-old Emmanuel Damas became at least the 10th person to die inside an ICE detention facility this year — more than one death per week. Damas was held at a for-profit CoreCivic facility in Florence, Arizona. He complained of a toothache in mid-February. He was denied a dentist, handed an Advil, and ignored. The toothache became pneumonia. The pneumonia became sepsis. He died on March 2nd. CoreCivic's CEO? Patrick D. Swindle. His predecessor made $7.4 million in 2024.
Meanwhile, Congress can't fund the DHS — the same bill has died in the Senate three times. Democrats are demanding ICE agents wear body cameras, show their faces, and use judicial — not administrative — warrants. The House passed it 221-209. The Senate can't get to 60.
Kristi Noem was fired — and Trump nominated Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as her replacement. Mullin is a plumber, an MMA fighter with a 5-0 record, and a self-described MAGA warrior. Thom Tillis says Mullin "likes dogs" — a not-so-subtle dig at Noem, who bragged about shooting her puppy Cricket in her memoir and called it a leadership lesson.
During her Senate testimony, Republican Senator John Kennedy pressed Noem on why she labeled Renée Good and Alex Pretti "domestic terrorists" — when video of both shootings showed the opposite. ICE's own acting director testified: "Nobody told Kristi they were domestic terrorists. We never said they were." Noem refused to apologize.
