The revelations this week that the British government covered up the importation of thousands of Afghans to this country reveal the very core of ineptitude and dishonesty at the heart of the British state. The underlying assumption in our bureaucracy appears to be that, whatever you do, don't tell the people what's going on.

My friend Rupert Lowe MP has been growing more and more concerned since he entered Parliament last year about what he has encountered: a refusal by officials to release relevant information, MPs essentially blocked from asking certain questions, process used at every turn to frustrate any attempt by politicians to enact change.
