as posted by the channelI delivered the keynote lecture at The Margaret Thatcher Centre Academic Symposium. In my lecture, entitled 'The Lessons of History: Margaret Thatcher and the Current Crisis of Conservatism', I wanted to tease out the tension within conservatism between accepting change and reversing it. There is no fixed answer to this dilemma. After the the Great Reform Act of 1832, Robert Peel decided to accept a changed Britain and reshaped the Conservative Party accordingly. This was a wise decision. However the determination of post-WWII Conservatives to accept the economic managerialism imposed by Labour was mistaken, and rightly reversed by Margaret Thatcher. Now we are at a similar moment. The Conservative governments of 2010 to 2014 not only accepted but actually furthered the constitutional vandalism of New Labour. We must overturn this settlement with courage and determination.
