Lessons from America | David Starkey Talks to British MP who moved to Mississippi

Summer is drawing to a close, but with the Court of Appeal's decision to continue housing illegal migrants at a hotel in Epping and official displeasure at Operation Raise the Colours ramping up, the discontent in the country isn't going anywhere.

To get a slightly different perspective I turned to Douglas Carswell, who as an MP was instrumental in triggering the Brexit referendum when he resigned from the Conservatives in his seat of Clacton (now of course the seat of Nigel Farage) and stood in a by-election for the UK Independence Party.

Since then Douglas has moved to Mississippi, from where he continues to offer trenchant observations on British public life, often coloured by his newfound perspective from an American state which, although traditionally thought of as poor, has now leapfrogged the average GDP of Britain.

Douglas joined me from a balcony overlooking New Orleans. In this episode we discuss the differences between British and American patriotism, and whether there are any lessons to be learned from the United States on how we can effect proper change here in Britain.
