While civil servants and those becoming British citizens are required to swear an 'Oath of Allegiance', it's a pale shadow of the US Pledge of Allegience recited daily by school pupils throughout the US. In Britain we had similar rituals when I was a young man. All public events, even cinema screenings, ended with the singing of the national anthem, for which everybody stood. What happened to it?
