"This is government of hypocrites," says Starkey as he speaks to lawyer fighting for Chagos Islands

Last week I spoke to Richard Tice MP, deputy leader of the Reform Party, about his backing for a legal action against the government's decision to surrender the Chagos Islands without consulting the people who are native to that land.

I'm choosing to focus again on the issue of the Chagos Islands because of just how much this legal action has revealed about the government's hypocrisies when it comes to international law and human rights law, as well as their contempt for the notion that the Chagossians are a distinct ethnic group. All of this has serious implications for the government's treatment of British people here in Britain.

Not only is the government arguing that the European Convenion on Human Rights, that great totem of international human rights law from which we are told we must never deviate, shouldn't apply to the Chagossians; it is also seeking to limit the scope of judicial review in this case.

James Tumbridge is a barrister who is representing the Chagossians in this case and speaks movingly about why this is so important. He also brings a brilliant lawyer's eye to the ideas I've been talking so much about, namely the abuse of our legal system to achieve social and political goals.
