An Orphan from the Ukraine is thrust into world's spotlight and consciousness, when her second set of adoptive parents, Michael and Kristine Barnett are charged with 2 counts of Felony Child Neglect in Indiana. The criminal charges shed light and open a pandora's box of facts and speculation about the age of the adoptee Natalia Grace Barnett. The Barnett's claim that their adopted daughter, who is a little person, was a sociopath hellbent on ending their lives and they further claim that they didn't adopt a young girl but instead adopted an adult who was posing as a child.
As they layers of the onion are peeled back, the story becomes more and more unbelievable. MAX aired a documentary featuring the Barnett's side of the story, well at least Michael's version, as Kristine refused to be interviewed by the filmmakers. What becomes evident as the series progresses is that perception is everything in this case. The questions begin to arise as the story unfolds...why did the Barnetts who already have three biological sons, decide to adopt?
Why did they adopt Natalia Grace, sight unseen, having never met her?
What motives did they have to re-age Natalia in an Indiana Court, where they convinced a judge, without a hearing no less, to re-age a girl that was believed to be nine years old and who instantly become a 22 year old young woman, in the eyes of the law...all while Natalia Grace was committed to a mental hospital in Indiana?
Upon being released from the mental hospital, the Barnetts proceed to rent and dump Natalia in a one bedroom apartment to fend for herself. If she's nine years old, that is an unthinkable act. If she's a 22 year old disabled person who has no money, no job, no education, and no way to provide even the most basic necessities for herself is equally unthinkable.
Recently MAX began airing the follow-up to the original series, Natalia Speaks, and this time we hear from Natalia herself and it's heartbreaking, but it still leaves you wondering, just a bit...is it possible that Natalia is in fact much older than the Barnett's were lead to believe, or were they just trying to rid themselves of what they considered to be a huge financial and emotional burden.
