BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
Dan Markel, a respected FSU law professor, was shot in his garage on July 18, 2014 in a murder-for-hire plot.
The alleged motive: a bitter custody dispute between Markel and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, after she was blocked from moving their children closer to her family in South Florida.
Over the years, multiple co-conspirators have been convicted:
Charlie Adelson – Donna’s son, serving life in prison.
Katherine Magbanua – Charlie’s then-girlfriend, also serving life.
Sigfredo Garcia – The hitman, serving life.
Luis Rivera – The getaway driver, serving 19 years after cooperating.
In November 2023, weeks after her son’s conviction, Donna was arrested at Miami International Airport as she attempted to flee to Vietnam, a country with no U.S. extradition treaty.
